A demonstration of what can be accomplished visually through CSS-based design. Select any style sheet from the list to load it into this page.
1. Less is More – When you first start building websites and web pages keep it simple. Use neutral colors and don’t over use images.
2. “Just because you can doesn’t mean you should” – don’t over use images and fancy text, and avoid animation when it’s not needed. Once again keep it simple.
3. Develop rational site navigation – Users should easily be able to navigate your site. Main pages should be easy to find and users should be able to quickly find the information they are looking for. Allow users multiple ways to find information. Every page should always have a link back to the home page.
4. Be consistent with your design – Make all pages look the same, don’t change the look and feel of your website from page to page. Just like writing a paper don’t switch fonts every other page or paragraph.
5. Be sure to cite sources on your website. Remember we are teaching students to cite work so be sure you do the same. If you use an image from another website be sure to give the original author credit.
6. Contact information – Be sure people know how to contact you via e-mail and snail mail.
7. Web-Linking – When linking to other websites make sure they student-friendly sites. Also check monthly to make sure they work.
8. Student Pictures – Be careful when posting student pictures on the web. Make sure you have parent’s permission when ever you post students images.
9. Be sure to update your web pages. Use a date mark in towards the bottom of the page that says the last day you made an update.
10. Have another set of eyes review your work. Just like publishing a book or document make sure you have someone look over your work.
